In Depth Coffee Reviews
Cherry Picker Package & Fare
Drink: Iced Vanilla Latte
Rating: 9.5/10
Details: In my opinion, this is exactly how a latte should taste at all times. It is the perfect coffee-espresso-cream-sweetness ratio. I prefer my coffee on the stronger side and this exceeds that preference in the perfect way. Very addicting.
Notes: The coffee shop is adorable, has a great location close to other unique dining, drinks and shops. Package & Fare also has one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever tasted.
B2 Cafe
Drink: The Bees Knees (honey and cinnamon)
Rating: 8.5/10
Details: This is a great latte. The delicious flavor combination was recommended as a favorite from the barista and I was not disappointed! Coffee was decently strong, while honey and cinnamon were present though not overbearing. Very refreshing.
Notes: The vibes in this little cafe are fun and retro. I love that it is next door to and run by Bambino's on Battlefield, as it is one of my favorite restaurants.
First Watch
Drink: Iced Coffee with cream and sugar
Rating: 8/10
Details: I'm not going to lie, this one caught me by surprise. The coffee is refreshing and smooth, I could stand for it to be a little stronger but it is still a good brew.
Chick-Fil-A
Drink: Cold Brew
Rating: 7.5/10
Details: This is another that surprised me, but maybe shouldn't have since after-all it is the Lord's. I would appreciate for the coffee to be a bit stronger, but all in all this is a good cold brew and you can't beat the convenience and customer service.
Scooter's
Drink: Iced Latte with hazelnut
Rating: 7/10
Details: I had heard lots of mixed reviews for Scooter's and was eager to try it myself. My experience was fine. Not bad, not great and definitely better than a lot of places. I would say it is good, just a little lacking. Weakish coffee and not great ratios with the cream and sweetness. I do appreciate the convenience and multiple drive thru locations around town. If you need a quick drink it'll do the job better than a lot of drive thrus.
McDonald's
Drink: Iced Caramel Latte
Rating: 7/10
Details: The people do not lie when they say McDonalds has good coffee. Is it great? Ehh, probably not. Is it consistently good? Yes. Their coffee is smooth and relatively strong. I would actually give it a higher rating, but it's usually a touch too sweet and I like to have a hint of added flavor or I would order it plain.
Starbucks
Drink: Iced Latte (sometimes toffee nut, sometimes caramel)
Rating: 6/10
Details: I'm not a big Starbucks fan. I think they're overrated, the coffee is mediocre and the barista's skills are inconsistent. I'm definitely not saying I could do better because I can't, but every time I order a drink it's a little different and I don't appreciate that.
Panera
Drink: Iced Caramel Late
Rating: 5/10
Details: I originally gave this drink a 6, but now that I reflect on it I really don't think that 6 is deserved. Soo to 5 we go. Panera used to have good coffee, I'm not sure what has happened. Now every time I grab a drink it is super weak. Not great coffee, not great flavors, not too sweet or anything but it's just kind of there. If you're craving a caffeinated, coffee like beverage I wouldn't recommend Panera as it either tastes eh like milk or eh like day old coffee.
In Depth Matcha Reviews
Architect Coffee
Drink: Iced Matcha Latte
Rating: 9/10
Details: Architect, you surprised me. With matcha being new to their menu I expected it would be a work in progress and oh was I wrong. This is how I like my matcha to taste. It is the perfect combination of earthy, matcha flavor and subtle sweetness. Plus, the color is great and I love that. Way to go, Architect!
Lotus Tea Co.
Drink: Iced Matcha Latte, oat milk and little sweetener
Rating: 8/10
Details: I love this drink! Dang it is delicious, I just wish it was a touch more matcha-y.
Notes: Lotus Tea Co. is located in Bolivar, Missouri, approximately 30 minutes north of Springfield.
Kingdom Coffee
Drink: Iced Matcha Latte
Rating: 8/10
Details: Very good and very refreshing! I feel like Kingdom's matcha may be a good option for people wanting to try matcha for the first time, as it is not too earthy tasting. Personally, I would prefer it to be a bit more matcha tasting but it's still great.
Mudhouse Coffee
Drink: Iced Matcha Latte
Rating: 8/10
Details: Something I love about Mudhouse is their consistency! Every time I go in I know what I can expect and it is always good. Their matcha is very good and another great option for a new matcha drinker. I would like it a little stronger, but it's still very good.
Dancing Mule
Drink: Iced Matcha Latte
Rating: 6/10
Details: I typically love Dancing Mule, but their matcha did not meet my expectations. Unfortunately, I felt like it was less of a latte and more of matcha and water. It's very earthy flavored but also watered down tasting. Definitely room for improvement in my opinion. I've heard matcha can be tricky to master, so there's grace for that in my mind. Also, not everywhere offers matcha so I suppose at least having the option is worth something!
Societea
Drink: Iced Matcha Lattee
Rating: 3/10
Details: I was super surprised by my experience here, as they specialize in teas. Maybe it was just a bad day, but I kid you not when I tell you I couldn't finish my drink. It was watery, weak and very off tasting. Maybe the milk was spoiled or something? It was straight up bad. I still give them a 3 with some grace in my mind because maybe it was a bad day or maybe that's how it's made in other areas? I have no idea. Let me know if you had a better experience here.
DISCLAIMER:
If you're wondering how I rate things, I consider things like strength, consistency in quality and ratios between flavors, milks, coffee, tea, etc. I prefer things to be a little on the strong side. Strong coffee, good espresso and a hint of additional flavor is great. I also like my matcha to be pretty natural tasting, but a lot of people don't. Also, please let me know MORE places I should try and review. I will be continually updating and adding to this list as time goes on.
