Our Colorful Wedding: Flowers & Cake
Flowers
As for my favorite part... the flowers. Staying true to our theme of "late summer garden party" I selected an array of locally grown blooms from some flower farming friends and ordered a slew of my tried and true favorites from a wholesaler. It was so much fun to finally get to design with all my favorite flowers, in all my favorite colors, and simply create something for my own enjoyment. I never dreamed that DIYing my own wedding flowers would be so enjoyable, but it's now one of my favorite memories of wedding prep.
My mom, friends Baylee and Brennah, and myself worked hard the week of the wedding to make my floral fantasies come true. We designed lots of centerpieces, decorative arrangements, a silk arbor installation and I took my time crafting the bouquets. All of the floral designs for our day were created using a garden inspired style with minimal greenery, tasteful flowering fillers and lots of large, lush focal flowers. I chose to design the bridesmaid bouquets in a monochromatic color palette matching each friend's dress so I could make each bouquet more intentional, adding in specific flowers I felt my friends might like or that made me think of them. Designing my bridesmaid bouquets this way was a fun (maybe even therapeutic) part of the process that added a little extra joy to my hectic week leading up to the wedding.
I cannot convey the joy these beautiful blooms evoked in not only me, but my guests as well. Everyone raved about the flowers-- they really brought everything together and were a fun way to artistically tie a piece of my heart into every decorative detail of the day. It brings a smile to my face every time I see a flowery photo of our special day. If you loved our wedding flowers, here's an itemized breakdown of the colors and varieties we used!

Wedding Cake Flowers
Our wedding cake has been a huge hit on Pinterest! Small cakes are becoming more common to save money on an unnecessary expense and to provide a variety of dessert options for guests. We chose to have a cute, minimal cake just for cutting, photos, and a few bites then served cupcakes to our guests.
I absolutely loved how the bakery we used incorporated the flowers I provided them, creating a miniature garden on top of the cake and tying it in perfectly with the rest of our beautiful, flower-filled day.
A silly little side note to anyone curious about DIYing their wedding flowers- I will dive into this more in a later blog post, but for now... a few things I learned below :-)
As a professional floral designer and experienced wedding florist, I knew what flower varieties, colors and design style I wanted long before our big day. I also knew that I wanted to save as much money as possible, yet have the floral fantasies I desired (within reason lol), but did not want to create too much work for myself the week of my wedding. It was such a conflicting decision for me. Do I design my own wedding flowers and create added stress to an already chaotic week? Do I fork over the cash and invest in another florist simply for my sanity? Do I purchase the flowers then let unexperienced friends take over, but risk being dissatisfied with the results? Gosh, it was a hard choice. I talked to lots of other florists that had done this and almost all of them advised me not to take on the added challenge, but the Enneagram 3 in me took over and I decided to just go for it.
To my surprise, I seriously enjoyed designing my own flowers. While it was a lot of hard work the week of my wedding, with great help from some loved ones the stress was lessened, I was pretty satisfied with the results and I did save a lot of money. Once we started processing the flowers I decided we were just going to have fun with it and do as much as we could, but if we started cutting it close "perfect" florals weren't worth the stress. This approach changed my mindset from control freak to fun and we got to work. Centerpieces were most important to me because they were the main reception decoration and could be prepped the furthest in advance, so we started with those. After the main designs were done, I started on the bridesmaid bouquets then my bouquet so it remained the freshest. Very lastly were the extra, decorative arrangements for throughout the venue that I was least concerned about getting done- thankfully my friend Brennah finished these for me while I was preoccupied with last minute wedding tasks. I was able to do our ceremony floral installation before our fresh flowers arrived since I chose to design it with faux flowers. Although I don't love faux flowers (nothing beats fresh IMO), I utilized them so I could design this piece a few weeks out since it was a pretty time consuming project. In the end, I didn't love the way it turned out. Starting it a few weeks before the wedding and working on it here and there as I had time, I figured it wouldn't be a difficult task, but I still ended up being limited on time and rushing to get it done. While it wasn't perfect, I'm not mad about it and it did add the fun pop of color I was looking for on the fireplace background of our ceremony space.
I thought I would be highly critical of my wedding flowers given my experience in the floral and wedding industries, yet I was actually the most flexible and least picky with them. I wanted them to look nice, but the pressure of perfection was off the table since it was just for me and not a paying client. As I mentioned above, it ended up being a wonderful experience and added a lot of joy to the week of my wedding. While I can't speak for other's experiences, I can say DIYing my flowers changed my perspective for talking to other DIY brides in the future. Designing your own flowers is NOT for everyone and it is not easy (especially if you have limited knowledge of flowers/proper care/basic design/etc.), but it is doable and it can save you money. Andddd I'll write more on this later, so keep an eye out for that content in the coming weeks if you're wanting more info on DIY wedding flowers.

Additional Items We Used and Loved!
No Mess Confetti Streamers- this was one of my favorite finds for our wedding! I was looking for something fun like confetti, but didn't want to make a huge mess for my parents and bridal party to clean up after our exit. I found these awesome, easy to clean up streamers and am so happy with how they turned out!
This extension cord power strip so we had plenty of outlets for phones and curling irons.
Candle lighters for the tables.
Silk pillow cases as a gift for my bridesmaids!
LMNT for the bridal party to stay hydrated since we got married in the middle of August.
Colorful Pocket Squares for the groomsmen! We did this instead of boutonnieres for the guys- it looked great, saved money and matched the bridesmaid dresses.
Fuzzy Slippers for getting ready!
This steamer for all the dresses and suits.
Our favorite portable speaker for the bridal suite while we got ready.
Pretty Ring Box for detail shots.
My favorite chiffon ribbon for bouquets and detail shots.
I designed our wedding invitations from a customizable template I purchased off of Etsy and I was so happy with how they turned out! The creator had several stunning options that were fully customizable and she was so helpful throughout my process as I had questions.
