20 of the Best Smelling Flowers for Your Home
As a florist I frequently received requests for fragrant flowers in the daily designs ordered. I also often overheard customers revel when they discovered the lack of scent put out by their favorite blooms, such as ranunculus and a lot of rose varieties. Some common misconceptions I learned were that a lot of people assume-
A. All flowers are fragrant
B. All flowers smell good
Neither are necessarily true, but I understand the thought process. I'm going to breakdown my top 20 favorite "best smelling flowers" so you know what smells good, what stinks, and what to request when ordering fragrant flowers to fill your home with sweet scents.
The Best Smelling Flowers
In my humble opinion-- starting with my favorites!
Stock Flower
Hyacinth
Sweet Pea
Basil
Lilac
Myrtle
Garden Roses
Eucalyptus (spiral/baby blue variety)
Peonies
Lavender
Jasmine
Mint
Freesia
Daffodils
Tuberose
Phlox
Waxflower
Gardenia
Marigold
Lilies
Non-Fragrant/Minimally Scented Flowers
Customers are frequently surprised that these blooms aren't strongly scented, they may carry a faint or "fresh" smell as anything grown outside, but aren't abundantly recognizable by a signature scent.
Roses (most Ecuadorian varieties, which are commonly used in most flower shops due to their year-round availability)
Ranunculus
Tulips
Carnations
Snapdragon
Hydrangea
Zinnia
Larkspur
Eucalyptus (most varieties except spiral eucalyptus, which is very fragrant)
Scabiosa
Billy Balls
Cosmos
Mums
Calla Lilies
Orchid
Hellebores
Celosia
Amaranth
Strawflower
Anemone
Stinky Flowers
I think they stink and so do a lot of people-- but for a select few they aren't "stinky", they're pleasantly nostalgic.
Baby's Breath
Limonium
Bradford Pear blooms
Lilies
Marigold
